Struggle to complete vote count continues<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The struggle to complete the vote count
\ncontinued on Thursday with subdistrict elections committees still
\ntallying ballots, as fatigue added to the burden of inexperienced
\ncommittee officials.<\/p>\n
In Bogor, West Java, as of Thursday the township elections
\ncommittee had only received the vote count from eight of the 68
\nsubdistrict committees, while the Bogor regency elections
\ncommittee had received ballot results from eight of the 415
\nsubdistrict committees.<\/p>\n
The sluggishness of the count spurned the township elections
\ncommittee to send a special team to check on the work of the
\ndistrict and subdistrict committees.<\/p>\n
Township committee head Didi Wiardi said mistakes abounded in
\nthe reports received from the subdistricts. \"Many of the figures
\nin the documents do not match.\"<\/p>\n
\"This is probably because many of the elections committee
\nworkers stayed up all night,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Didi said it would not be easy to change mistakes found in the
\nreports. \"All parties must attend the meeting and agree to any
\nchanges. This needs time. It is better that the counts are a bit
\nlate, but free and fair.\"<\/p>\n
In Bogor township, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n(PDI Perjuangan) was in the lead with 18,225 votes for the House
\nof Representatives, followed by Golkar; while in Bogor regency,
\nGolkar was leading with 91,132 votes for the House, trailed by
\nPDI Perjuangan.<\/p>\n
There was good news from Central Java where at least counting
\nat subdistrict polling stations were completed.<\/p>\n
Achmad Rofai, a provincial election committee member in charge
\nof technical affairs, told Antara that all ballot boxes from
\n47,674 polling stations had been sent to district offices. Cross
\nchecking data would then take four days to complete and would
\nreach the National Election Committee by June 17 after result
\nreports were checked at the regional and provincial levels.<\/p>\n
But Central Java's prosecutor's office has begun to check
\nreports of violations including vote buying. Police chief
\nMaj.Gen. Nurfaizi said there were 102 incidences since the
\ncampaign period apart from thousands of circulars discrediting
\nparties up until poll day, which is prohibited.<\/p>\n
In West Sumatra all regencies except Bukittinggi have sent
\ntheir results to the provincial committee.<\/p>\n
But in South Aceh, Aceh, 480 of 837 polling places
\nhave yet to report poll results to the regency elections
\ncommittee, Antara reported on Thursday. This was because of
\ndelays in holding the polls in the volatile province.<\/p>\n
The polls in six villages in the Kluet Utara district of South
\nAceh were delayed until Tuesday because of threats against poll
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
In Irian Jaya, polls were also delayed in some areas.
\nJayawijaya regional elections committee chairman Demianus
\nDjehaduk told The Jakarta Post on Thursday that ballots were even
\nsent by plane to Kenyam district on polling day, he said, adding
\nit would have taken at least two days for the ballots to arrive
\nin the district had they been delivered by foot.<\/p>\n
\"It may be after June 20 before we are able to send in our
\nresults,\" Demianus said, adding he hoped the General Elections
\nCommission understood their difficulties.<\/p>\n
In Yogyakarta, only 70 percent of votes had reached the
\nprovincial committee. In case of a discrepancy of even one vote a
\nvisit to the concerned polling station would be needed, given the
\nabsence of telephones. On Thursday a special team was sent to
\nGunung Kidul regency to assist tallying.<\/p>\n
In Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, residents said they did not
\nmind the slow vote count as long as the results were honest.<\/p>\n
Former Golkar polling place chairman Wilem Beda said in past
\nelections rapid vote counting was made possible by widespread
\nfraud, usually to the benefit of Golkar.<\/p>\n
In Sikka regency, Golkar protested because a blind woman who
\ntold a poll committee member she wanted to vote for Golkar was
\nallegedly guided to vote for PDI Perjuangan. Someone who
\nallegedly witnessed the episode reported the incident to the
\nlocal Golkar office. The committee member denied the charge.
