Striking workers cripple seaport<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some 850 workers of the Jakarta International
\nContainer Terminal (JICT) in Tanjung Priok seaport, North
\nJakarta, went on strike on Monday, leaving the usually hectic
\nport deserted and thousands of containers untouched at the docked
\nvessels.<\/p>\n
None of the JICT management could be reached for comment, but
\nreports said they would take stiff measures against the striking
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
The workers, who staged the rally at the House of
\nRepresentatives building, said they were dissatisfied with the
\nprivatization of terminal activities at the international
\nseaport, saying that the deal was full of irregularities.<\/p>\n
\"We will ask for an explanation for the action from JICT's
\nboard of directors. We want to know what really was the problem,\"
\nthe spokesman of the state-owned seaport operator PT Pelindo II,
\nSudjarwo, told The Jakarta Post by phone.<\/p>\n
PT Pelindo is one of JICT's shareholders.<\/p>\n
Sudjarwo said the terminal earned about US$1 million a day.<\/p>\n
\"Income is always fluctuating. Most companies do their
\nbusiness there on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We don't know yet how much the terminal suffered in terms of
\nlosses because of the strike,\" he said. (nvn)<\/p>",
