Strike continues at Bali hotel<\/p>\n
NUSA DUA, Bali (JP): Hundreds of employees of Melia Bali Hotel
\ncontinued their strike for the second day on Thursday, demanding
\nthe dismissal of four hotel executives whom they accuse of
\nmistreating the staff.<\/p>\n
About 680 workers \"occupied\" the five-star hotel by holding a
\nsit-down throughout the day and refusing to serve any guests.<\/p>\n
Guests at the 500-room hotel were moved to neighboring hotels.
\nThey had been transferred by tour agents since Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
Hopes for a negotiated end to the strike remained hampered by
\nThursday evening.<\/p>\n
Three directors from PT Surya Semesta Internusa -- the holding
\ncompany of PT Suryalaya Anindita, which owns the Melia Bali Hotel
\nand Gran Melia Jakarta -- flew from Jakarta to meet with employee
\nrepresentatives.<\/p>\n
The three were identified as president director Marseno Wiryo
\nSaputro, director Edy P. Ikanta and deputy director Johannes
\nSuriadjaya, who is also the director of PT Suryalaya Anindita.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the workers' representatives demanded the
\nhotel's general manager, Daniel Lozano, financial controller I
\nGusti Putu Wisesa, executive assistant manager Ketut Darta and
\nHuman Resources Manager Rita Laksmiwati be dismissed.<\/p>\n
Johannes, however, said the company was not in a position to
\ndismiss them as the management of the hotel was handed over to
\nSol Melia Spain, a hotel management service provider.<\/p>\n
He said PT Suryalaya Anindita had no authority to intervene
\nwith management affairs.<\/p>\n
\"All managers were appointed by Sol Melia Spain. Therefore, if
\nwe want to dismiss them we have to submit a request to (Sol Melia
\nSpain) first,\" Johannes said.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, he pledged to do his best to find a satisfactory
\nsolution to the matter.<\/p>\n
Workers claim that the work environment was no longer suitable
\nand workers were being exploited by the hotel management.<\/p>\n
\"They (the managers) often impose sanctions, or make new
\npolicies that are discouraging to the workers,\" Putu Widiana,
\nspokesman of the labor union in the Melia Bali Hotel said.<\/p>\n
Hotel labor union chief Wayan Badra also claimed that among
\nthe incidents of mistreatment was a severe reprimand for an
\nemployee who took a day off for her wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n
The workers have refused to hold talks with the management and
\nstressed that they only wanted to discuss the matter with the
\nhotel owner.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday afternoon managers of the hotel could not be
