        "content": "<p>Strict IPR would boost ASEAN trade<\/p>\n<p>Southeast Asian nations would boost their trade and investment<br>\nprospects by introducing more stringent intellectual property<br>\nrights protection standards, European Union (EU) officials said<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)<br>\nare beefing up cooperation on intellectual property rights (IPR)<br>\ncooperation, with a two-day workshop in Bangkok that began<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was organized under the new European Commission-<br>\nASEAN Intellectual Property Rights Cooperation Programme (ECAP<br>\nII), which fosters trade, investment and technology transfer<br>\nbetween the two blocs.<\/p>\n<p>Klauspeter Schmallenbach, head of the delegation of the<br>\nEuropean Commission in Bangkok, said the ability to comply with<br>\nintellectual property rights rules would help developing nations<br>\ntake part in global trade.<\/p>\n<p>ECAP II would help ASEAN countries \"draw on European expertise<br>\nin how to protect and enforce intellectual property rights\" in<br>\ncompliance with World Trade Organization rules, he said in a<br>\nstatement.<\/p>\n<p>\"Such rights form one of the basic pillars upon which business<br>\nand investor confidence are based. They are an essential tool for<br>\nany country's economic development and through their<br>\nimplementation may help boost European investment in the region<br>\nback to pre-crisis levels.\"<\/p>\n<p>European Patents Office president Ingo Kober said it was vital<br>\nthat Southeast Asian states introduced proper legal and technical<br>\ninfrastructure to defend trademarks.<\/p>\n<p>\"These structures are developing in ASEAN countries, clearly<br>\nthere's a much larger interest than there was 20 or 30 years<br>\nago,\" he said, but adding that the performance of some nations<br>\nwas better than others.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are countries which in a number of aspects are still<br>\ndeveloping. I think one should not try to tell them how far they<br>\nare lagging behind.\"<\/p>\n<p>Kober said the two-day symposium, which brought together 50<br>\nexperts in the field, \"is further proof of the growing importance<br>\nof IPR protection to world trade.\" --AFP<\/p>",
