Residents in East Prabumulih, Prabumulih City, South Sumatra, found a
juvenile silvered leaf monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus) by the
roadside, apparently separated from its mother and troop. The protected
primate has since been rescued by the South Sumatra Natural Resources
Conservation Agency (BKSDA).

“One juvenile silvered leaf monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus) was
rescued by officers from the South Sumatra BKSDA, under the Ministry of
Forestry, after being found by residents of East Prabumulih District,
Prabumulih City, without its mother or troop,” the agency said in an
official statement seen on Monday (26 October 2026).

A resident initially found the young monkey alone by the roadside and
took it home to provide temporary care.

“After making enquiries and learning that the silvered leaf monkey is
a protected animal, the person who found it sought help through the
neighbourhood association head. The report was then passed to the South
Sumatra BKSDA call centre. In response, officers from the Region II
Natural Resources Conservation Section went to the location to carry out
the rescue,” the agency said.

“Officers examined the animal and provided initial care appropriate
to its condition. This is important to ensure the juvenile receives
proper treatment, given its very young age and continued need for milk,”
it added.

Officers estimated that the monkey was about three months old and in
good physical condition. However, the South Sumatra BKSDA, part of the
Ministry of Forestry, said it was mildly stressed because of the changes
in its circumstances and environment.

“The good news is that the juvenile is still willing to suckle.
During rehabilitation, it will receive further observation and
multivitamins to support its condition and adjustment. At such a young
age, every feed and aspect of care must be closely monitored to
safeguard its development,” the agency said.

The South Sumatra BKSDA urged the public to help protect wildlife.
Anyone who encounters a similar situation is advised to report it
directly to the agency so that the animal can be properly cared for.
",
