Street vendors' welfare<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Council has criticized the city
\nadministration for failing to improve the welfare of street
\nvendors operating in the city.<\/p>\n
Lukman F. Mokoginta, chairman of the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty (PDI) faction of the council, said over the weekend that
\nthe welfare of street vendors will be considered improved when
\nmany of them manage to operate their own kiosks or legally hire
\nspace at new markets in the capital.<\/p>\n
Lukman said the city administration should not consider the
\nincrease in total fees collected from sidewalk vendors a success.
\nThe municipal government reported recently that the fees
\ncollected from the vendors during the 1994\/1995 fiscal year
\nreached Rp 1.6 billion (US$736,468), far exceeding the target of
\nRp 1.4 billion.<\/p>\n
\"Don't see this figure as a success, because it shows that the
\ncity administration's efforts to reduce the number of street
\nvendors has completely failed,\" Lukman said.<\/p>\n
The higher amount of fee collection indicates that the number
\nof vendors is growing, not falling as expected, he said. (32)<\/p>",
