        "content": "<p>Street vendors protest planned eviction<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: More than 300 street vendors, who live along the <br>\nbanks of Mataram River in Sleman regency here, rejected on <br>\nThursday a plan by the Sleman government to evict them.<\/p>\n<p>Riding a truck, five cars and dozens of motorcycles, the <br>\nstreet vendors descended on the official residence of Yogyakarta <br>\nGovernor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X here to solicit support from <br>\nhim to cancel the plan.<\/p>\n<p>But, the protesters went home disappointed, as Suwarno, an <br>\nofficial with the Yogyakarta governor's office, told the <br>\nprotesters that the governor was out of town.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, despite the protest, Sleman regent Ibnu Subiyanto <br>\npledged that he would stick to his plan to evict the street <br>\nvendors. -- JP<\/p>\n<p>Rote Ndao gets new regent<\/p>\n<p>KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Rote Ndao regency legislative <br>\ncouncil elected on Thursday running mates Christian Nehemia <br>\nDillak and Bernard E. Pelle as regent and deputy regent of the <br>\nRote Ndao regency for the 2003-2008 term.<\/p>\n<p>The pair, who contested the election on the Golkar Party <br>\nticket, defeated a rival pair from the ruling party Indonesian <br>\nDemocratic Party of Struggle, Melkianus Adoe and Frids Fanggidae.<\/p>\n<p>In the election on Thursday, held in the Rote Ndao capital of <br>\nBaa, Dillak-Pelle grabbed 11 votes out of a total 20 votes, while <br>\nrival pair Adoe-Fanggidae only got eight votes.<\/p>\n<p>Another vote was declared invalid due to an error found in the <br>\nballot paper. A legislator apparently misspelled the name of a <br>\ncandidate. -- JP<\/p>\n<p>East Barito to get reforestation fund<\/p>\n<p>PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: The central government has <br>\nhanded over a Rp 3.29 billion (US$411,250) fund to the newly <br>\nestablished East Barito regency administration here, to finance  <br>\na reforestation program in the area, an official said.<\/p>\n<p>Suharto, the project leader for the reforestation program, <br>\nsaid that the reforestation program, which just started, would <br>\ncover 449 hectares of land. Among the trees that had been <br>\nselected to be planted in the area are super teak and rubber <br>\ntrees.<\/p>\n<p>East Barito was established earlier this year, after a split <br>\nwith the South Barito administration. -- Antara<\/p>",
