Street vendors permitted<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The controversy over the presence of street
\nvendors in the city during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan
\nhas ended after Governor Sutiyoso declared on Tuesday that the
\ncity's streets would be open to seasonal small-scale traders.<\/p>\n
The governor said the city administration would allow street
\nvendors to operate during Ramadhan if they consulted the offices
\nof the five mayors concerning their trading plans.<\/p>\n
"The important thing is that the street vendors should keep
\nthe city's streets in order and coordinate with the mayors,"
\nSutiyoso said while addressing participants of a panel discussion
\non the city's inspectorate agency at Hotel Horison, Ancol, North
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
"The street vendors can use several less-populated locations
\nin the city so that they do not create traffic jams and violate
\npublic order."<\/p>\n
The statement was contradictory to a statement he made last
\nweek when he announced a 100-day public order program, including
\nmeasures to curb seasonal street vendors.<\/p>\n
The governor expressed confidence that the street vendors
\nwould not pose any problems to the city in the future.<\/p>\n
"There will not be a problem if the street vendors coordinate
\nwith the local administration and comply with the laws and
\nregulations," he said.<\/p>\n
"It has become a tradition to let seasonal vendors operate on
\nthe city's streets and provide them spaces during Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
"Furthermore, city residents need the vendors."<\/p>\n
It is common to see street markets set up along the city's
\nstreets during Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
Residents have repeatedly complained that the seasonal markets
\ncause serious traffic jams. Their presence adds to the already
\ncrowded streets, which already have permanent street vendors.<\/p>\n
Most seasonal vendors sell food and refreshments, such as
\ncakes, dates, fruit and juice. Dates are popular during the
\nfasting month. Some vendors also sell new clothes and fireworks.
