Strange Megawati<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri clearly refused to sack
\nAttorney General M.A. Rachman for his public lies regarding his
\npersonal wealth. She argued that dismissing Rachman did not
\nguarantee that the next Attorney General would be better and
\ncleaner. By making such a decision, Megawati has disappointed the
\npeople.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Rachman should have resigned voluntarily
\nfor his dishonesty when revealing his wealth. He did not mention
\nhis properties in Cinere, South Jakarta and Bidara Cina, East
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
On the forms submitted to the Public Servants' Wealth Audit
\nCommission (KPKPN), Rachman agreed to resign if he was found to
\nhave lied in filling the forms.<\/p>\n
Megawati's argument could backfire on her. It is the
\nPresident's prerogative to find officials at the ministerial
\nlevel who have a high sense of morality. It is therefore at great
\nrisk that Megawati retains an official, who has become notorious
\nfor his dishonesty. Her own reputation is at stake for protecting
\nor defending such an official.<\/p>\n
Megawati's reluctance to fire Rachman could plant a suspicion
\nin the people, that she is part of the public lie.<\/p>\n
