Store owners invited to join Discount Fair<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Chamber of
\nCommerce and Industry (Kadin) is calling on businesses to
\nparticipate in the Discount Fair, which starts on June 14 to
\ncommemorate the city's anniversary and Independence Day.<\/p>\n
Kadin president Pungky Bambang Purwadi said on Wednesday the
\norganizer would use the event to promote Jakarta as a tourist
\nshopping destination.<\/p>\n
\"We will be expecting both local and foreign tourists from
\nneighboring countries to come to the capital for the Discount
\nFair,\" Pungky said, adding that cooperation had been set up with
\nthe Inbound Tour Operators Club (ITOC) and Indonesian embassies
\nfor promotional purposes abroad.<\/p>\n
Jakarta will celebrate its 473th anniversary on June 22 and
\nthe country will commemorate the 55th anniversary of independence
\nAug. 17.<\/p>\n
\"Companies will offer up to 70 percent discount on their
\nmerchandise during the event, so that Jakartans from all economic
\nlevels can take part in the celebration,\" head of the organizing
\ncommittee, Yustian Ismail, said.<\/p>\n
Yustian assured the public that discounts would be offered
\nfrom the original prices of merchandise, not from marked-up
\nprices.<\/p>\n
\"Law No. 8\/1999 on customer protection will apply, so
\nsanctions will be imposed on any businessperson who marks up
\nprices,\" Yustian added.<\/p>\n
Touching on the security condition in the city, Pungky
\nexplained that he had urged Governor Sutiyoso to give assurances
\nthat the city was safe so that everything would go as expected.<\/p>\n
He voiced optimism that the event would demonstrate to
\nother countries that Indonesia's economic, social and security
\nconditions had improved.<\/p>\n
\"However, we will discuss it further with representatives of
\nthe city administration, the Jakarta Police and the Jakarta
\nMilitary,\" Pungky said.<\/p>\n
Sales at this year's event, which in previous years was called
\nthe Shopping Festival, are expected to exceed sales at the 1997
\nevent by 15 percent to 20 percent. Transactions in 1997 totaled
\nRp 1.62 trillion (US$192.8 million), which was 8 percent higher
\nthan 1999's Rp 1.5 trillion.<\/p>\n
A representative from the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant
\nAssociation (PHRI), I Nyoman Pendit, said despite the economic
\ncrisis which had affected the hotel and restaurant industry, the
\nassociation would offer discounts on their services. He noted,
\nhowever, that the association members would meet to discuss the
\npercentage of discounts to be offered.<\/p>\n
The one-month event will also be participated in by companies
\ngrouped under the Association of Indonesian Retailers (Arpindo),
\nthe Makers of Garment and Accessories Association (APGAI), the
\nJakarta Promotion Board (Jakprom), city-owned market operator PD
\nPasar Jaya, the Indonesian Direct Selling Association (APLI),
\nand the Indonesian Shopping Centers Management Organization
