Stop Merukh, activists demand<\/p>\n
PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: Officials of the local
\nbranch office of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) urged the
\nlocal government yesterday to ban rival party chief Yusuf Merukh.<\/p>\n
Local party officials said that Merukh should not be allowed
\nto establish a rival board in the province as he has done in
\nseveral other places.<\/p>\n
Chief of the PDI branch office, Metropole B Djanguk, said that
\nthe lack of government action against Merukh indicates approval
\nof the establishment of a fourth political party.<\/p>\n
Merukh is the arch rival of legitimate PDI chief Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri. She was elected by popular vote in 1993. Merukh
\nrejects her leadership and has established a rival board.<\/p>\n
Metropole said that rival activists' loyalty to the party is
\nhighly questionable. He added that he has sent letters to the
\nlocal police chief and local administration to ban Merukh from
\nvisiting the province.<\/p>\n
\"They are frustrated simply because they have no seat in the
