Stop fighting in Aceh<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Some 70 student activists, grouped under the Aceh
\nCoalition of Democratic Societies (KMDA), called on the
\nIndonesian government and the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM)
\non Friday to stop the armed conflict, at least during the Muslim
\nfasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
The call was contained in an open letter addressed to GAM's
\ntop leader Tengku Hasan Muhammad Tiro and President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri, copies of which were made available to the media.<\/p>\n
Coalition spokesman Muhammad Saleh pointed out that the call
\nwas issued because both parties had the potential to wage
\nviolence and the violations of human rights.<\/p>\n
"As such, the coalition has asked both parties to stop
\nviolence, intimidation and terrorism in Aceh soon," Saleh said.<\/p>\n
He made it clear that the call was directed toward exerting
\npressure on both the Indonesian military and police, as well as
\nGAM troops, which have all committed violence and human rights
