Stigma bearing ID cards<\/p>\n
What about the (ex-communists) who are now living in freedom
\nin our society? It is said that they have their ID cards stamped
\nwith the ET (ex-political detainees) mark. Because of that code,
\nthey are easily detected whenever they must deal with government
\noffices. Normally, an official who encounters a person whose ID
\ncard bears the ET mark will keep his distance and adopt a
\nwatchful attitude. This naturally hurts those people.<\/p>\n
Are codes indeed necessary under the present stable security
\nconditions? Is the resilience of our society not strong enough to
\ntake care of them? Isn't it true that our security authorities
\nare not idle? Some recognition of their dignity seems quite in
\norder, particularly when looked at from a humanitarian point of
\nview. This is all the more true if they have come to realize
\ntheir offenses.<\/p>\n
Eventually, one consequence of discarding the ET stamp would
\nbe to determine our attitude towards their children and
\ngrandchildren. A realization on their part that their fathers or
\ngrandfathers were wrong is necessary. Still, they should not be
\nmade to bear the burden of the sins of their elders, particularly
\nwhen they have shown themselves to be good in conduct and
\naccomplishments. Against the perpetrators themselves, a revision
\nof their punishment can be made, although on a selective basis.
\nSuch selectivity is dictated by the need to remain watchful.<\/p>\n
