Aceh continues<\/p>\n<p>BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): There remained a steady exodus of<br>\npeople from Central Aceh to coastal areas in the province as<br>\nconcerns rose following a warning from the Free Aceh Movement<br>\n(GAM) separatist group that they would step up attacks against<br>\nsecurity personnel in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly, many trucks carrying household furnishings were<br>\nmoving from Central Aceh to North Aceh, Pidie regency and the<br>\nprovincial capital of Banda Aceh.<\/p>\n<p>Central Aceh administration secretary Ibnu Hajar admitted that<br>\nthousands had left their homes in the regency for coastal areas<br>\nin the province.<\/p>\n<p>Banda Aceh Police spokesman Comr. Sudharsono told the media in<br>\nBanda Aceh on Tuesday that police were ready to safeguard the<br>\ntransport of passengers and goods, including fuel, to Central<br>\nAceh.<\/p>\n<p>Central Aceh has a population of about 250,000, some 40<br>\npercent of which are migrants from Java.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the growing tension, Central Aceh has seen<br>\nincreasing shortages in food as those operating transport<br>\nvehicles have been reluctant to ply the Bireuen-Central Aceh<br>\nroute.<\/p>\n<p>The scarcity of fuel and basic necessities have seen prices<br>\nsoar in the regency.<\/p>\n<p>The tension in the area has been aggravated by Central Aceh<br>\nGAM spokesman Wien Rimba Raya's statement on Monday that<br>\nseparatist rebels will step up attacks on military and police<br>\ninstallations in the area.<\/p>\n<p>He urged local communities to temporarily move from the area<br>\nto prevent casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Violence in Central Aceh in the past month has claimed at<br>\nleast 100 lives including security personnel, alleged rebels and<br>\ncivilians.<\/p>\n<p>Military spokesman for Lhokseumawe Lt. Col. Firdaus claimed<br>\nthat at least 20 alleged rebels have been killed in clashes<br>\nbetween the Indonesian Military (TNI) and GAM in Central Aceh in<br>\nthe past month.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the other victims he insisted were civilians killed by<br>\nthe rebels.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, at least five fatalities were reported in an<br>\nexchange of fire in Panca village, Seulimun subdistrict, Aceh<br>\nBesar, about 50 kilometers from Banda Aceh on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>According to Comr.
