        "content": "<p>Statue to commemorate ethnic riots<\/p>\n<p>SAMPIT, Central Kalimantan: In commemoration of the human<br>\ntragedies of the February 2001 ethnic conflicts that swept<br>\nthrough the town of Sampit and other areas in Central Kalimantan,<br>\nthe local administration will erect a pantar statue in East Kota<br>\nWaringin regency.<\/p>\n<p>Fedlik Asser, one of the initiators of the project, said on<br>\nSaturday the planned statue would be erected by the local<br>\nadministration and the Dayak Society Association.<\/p>\n<p>The monument will be erected along the Sampit-Pangkalan Bun<br>\nhighway on July 17. It will be constructed of hardwood locally<br>\nknown as ulin, and will measure 60 centimeters in diameter and 23<br>\nmeters in height, Asser said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the statue would symbolize the struggles of the Dayak<br>\npeople and serve to remind them to live peacefully and<br>\nharmoniously with others.<\/p>\n<p>Ethnic clashes between Dayaks and Madurese migrants from Java<br>\nbroke out last year, claiming hundreds of lives and forcing<br>\nthousands of Madurese to flee the province. --Antara<\/p>",
