Statistics bureau to take census on economic structure<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Bureau of Statistics plans to
\nconduct an economic census to obtain data on ways to overcome the
\nunequal distribution of development gains.<\/p>\n
Bureau chairman Sugito said yesterday that the census, which
\nwill start in December, is expected to come up with comprehensive
\ndata on the national economic structure, including imbalances in
\neconomic development among the various provinces and sectors.<\/p>\n
\"The data are needed to forge strategies to promote even
\ndistribution of the fruits of development,\" he said at a hearing
\nwith House of Representatives Commission X on sciences.<\/p>\n
He said that the census would cover all levels of businesses
\nfrom small-scale entrepreneurs to conglomerates.<\/p>\n
The government bureau's plan received strong support from the
\ncommission. Legislators expressed their hope that the census
\nwould help narrow the widening gulf between the rich and the
\npoor.<\/p>\n
M.P. Pasaribu of the ruling Golkar party and Syaifuddin of the
\nUnited Development Party factions warned that the economic
\ndisparities among individuals and regions could burst like a time
\nbomb if they are not properly addressed.<\/p>\n
\"Political will in the part of the government is also vital to
\novercome the problem,\" Pasaribu said.<\/p>\n
Alif Sofyan of the Indonesian Democratic Party said that the
\ngovernment should also step up development in the eastern part of
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Sugito said that BPS would use labor indicators to classify
\neconomic activities.<\/p>\n
For instance, a company employing 5 to 21 workers will fall
\ninto the small business category, while those employing 22 to 99
\nworkers will be medium-scale businesses and those employing 100
\nworkers or more will be considered large-scale, he said.<\/p>\n
He said that almost all large-scale companies, including
\nconglomerate owners, are reluctant to give data on their business
