State presses for trial of African<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A state prosecutor urged Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court yesterday to try a Cameroonian soccer player who
\nhas been accused of swindling Rp 10 million ($4,200) from two
\nIndonesians.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Rukmini Djalil called on the court to reject
\ncounter arguments put forward by lawyers defending 24-year-old
\nFementeu Nguefack Berlain Erick.<\/p>\n
The lawyers earlier argued for dismissal, claiming
\ninaccuracies in the dossier, including the fact that he was a
\nChristian and not a Moslem. They also claimed arrest procedures
\nwere not properly followed.<\/p>\n
An interpreter provided by the state prosecutor translated the
\nhearing into English for the defendant.<\/p>\n
Erick was arrested in March based on a report by two
\nIndonesians who said the man swindled them.<\/p>\n
The complainants said they handed over Rp 10 million to Erick
\nwho allegedly promised he could double their money. They received
\npaper cuttings instead.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor has accused Erick of violating Article 378 of
\nthe Criminal Code on deception. If found guilty, he faces a
\nmaximum four years' imprisonment. (12)<\/p>",
