State-owned Indosat launches interactive Internet service<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned international telecommunications
\ncarrier PT Indosat launched yesterday Indonesia Interactive, an
\ninteractive Internet service in cooperation with U.S. software
\ncompany Microsoft.<\/p>\n
Indosat's president, Tjahjono Soerjodibroto, said that his
\ncompany and Microsoft also had formed an alliance for the use of
\nWindows NT, Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) and
\nMicrosoft BackOffice-based system to run variety of services.<\/p>\n
"Microsoft's tradition of excellence and commitment to
\nInternet technologies made this the right choice for Indosat," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"Microsoft's technologies provide Indosat with a core set of
\ntechnologies that enable us to deliver Internet-based online
\nservice and other broadband multimedia services. We will gain a
\ntremendous business and technical advantage across our wide range
\nof services for consumers and business."<\/p>\n
Indosat, which is listed on the Jakarta, Surabaya and New York
\nstock exchanges, operates international telecommunications
\nservice. Last year the company launched its Internet service,
\nIndosatnet, in a bid to tap the growing multimedia business.<\/p>\n
Indosatnet applies MCIS technology in offering the Indonesia
\nInteractive, which is known as i2 locally. The i2 service
\nfeatures news, business information, stock quotes, tour and
\ntravel information, entertainment, news and chat-lines, net
\nmeetings and movie previews.<\/p>\n
MCIS enhances the i2 system by allowing users to personalize
\ntheir Internet service and choose subjects based on their
\ninterests. Microsoft software can be used to search the Web for
\nInternet users. In addition, the system offers online financial
\ndealings, also known as E-Commerce, supported by Citibank.<\/p>\n
The i2, which is also supported by Digital, is free to all
\nIndosatnet users and available to everyone on the net.<\/p>\n
Microsoft's director of international business development,
\nStephen Wu, said that his company and Indosat were working
\ntogether to deliver superior Internet-based services to
\nIndosatnet users.<\/p>\n
"Indosat's commitment to our MCIS is the beginning of an
\nalliance that will take advantage of the strengths of both
\ncompanies," he said.<\/p>\n
In a recorded video, Microsoft head Bill Gates said that
\nIndosat had been a leader in providing local content on the
\nInternet.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications
\nJoop Ave said of the i2 launch that the government, if necessary,
\nwould dispatch "Internet cops" to block the transmission of
\nmaterials that go against the country's values.<\/p>\n
Pornography and materials that threaten national security are
\namong the contents that would be restricted on the Internet, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Though Joop said such restrictions were technically feasible,
\nhe did not know what device could be used to control Internet
