Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has stated that Indonesia's fiscal position remains robust, with the budget deficit at 0.70% of GDP as of May 2026. He highlighted a significant 22.1% year-on-year increase in tax revenue and first-quarter economic growth of 5.61%, driven by both government programmes and private sector activity. Purbaya dismissed comparisons to the 1998 crisis, asserting that consumer purchasing power and economic expansion remain strong.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has presented the progress of
Indonesia’s economic development and fiscal management up to May 2026.
Purbaya noted that the State Budget (APBN) deficit reached 0.70% of
Gross Domestic Product (GDP), amounting to Rp 180.4 trillion as of May
2026.

This stability is supported by successful efforts to increase tax
revenue, which grew by 22.1% (yoy) following tax reforms and the
reorganisation of tax officials.

“This means that with the current deficit figure, our state budget is
still very well-maintained. The primary success is our ability to
significantly increase tax revenue. Compared to the first five months of
last year, our taxes grew by 22.1%. That is a very significant growth,”
he stated during the CNBC Indonesia Economic Update on Wednesday
(24/6/2026).

In line with the economic growth achievement of 5.61% (yoy) in the
first quarter of 2026, Purbaya mentioned that the sources of national
economic growth are performing well. This includes flagship government
programmes such as the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) as well as the private
sector, which has been successfully driven by the Prabowo
administration.

“The contribution of government spending to the economy is only
around 7.7%. The remainder comes from the private sector,” said
Purbaya.

In other words, if the private sector had not shown movement, the
national economy would not have achieved a growth of 5.61% in the first
quarter of 2026.

“This shows that the President’s strategy to build the economy
through both the government and the private sector is working well. That
is something many people often forget,” Purbaya added.

Purbaya also emphasised that public purchasing power is showing a
positive trend. This is reflected in data regarding consumption and
automotive sales, indicating that the Indonesian economy is still
expanding and is far from the impression of heading towards a crisis
similar to 1998. Furthermore, government stimuli, such as the 13th-month
salary for Civil Servants and Pensioners, have also successfully
supported the national economy.

“So, it is far from the impression that we are heading towards
another 1998-style crisis. Our economy is still expanding, perhaps at
above 5.4% or more. We will have to see as the data has not yet been
released,” Purbaya asserted.
",
