Startling request for Golkar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A neighborhood chief unchallenged since 1974 in
\nCakung, East Jakarta, has asked for a typewriter if Golkar wins
\nnext month's election.<\/p>\n
Muhadjir's request may sound odd to many Jakartan bureaucrats
\nwho have long been computer literate, but he insisted that
\nalthough he had been \"in power\" for more than 20 years he still
\ndreamed of owning a typewriter.<\/p>\n
\"We don't mean to aim high. A typewriter will surely do,\" he
\nsaid in a discussion with the Director General for Culture Edi
\nSedyawati at a Golkar campaign Monday.<\/p>\n
Muhadjir, 45, said the absence of a typewriter has often made
\nhim the target of practical jokes because he has to write
\ndocuments by hand in this computer age.<\/p>\n
\"The neighborhood has spearheaded Golkar's victory since the
\nbeginning,\" he was quoted as saying by Antara. \"So give us a
\ntypewriter,\" he said to the thunderous laughter of the hundreds
\nof Golkar supporters.<\/p>\n
Sedyawati promised to tell the local district chief about his
\nrequest. \"A typewriter should be no problem,\" she said. (pan)<\/p>",
