'Star' value on the high seas<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): SuperStar Virgo is only one of 12 cruise vessels
\noperated in the Asia Pacific by Malaysian-based Star Cruises.<\/p>\n
The other 11 vessels are the Star Aquarius, Star Pisces,
\nSuperStar Aries, SuperStar Gemini, SuperStar Leo,
\nSuperStar Taurus, MegaStar Aries, MegaStar Taurus,
\nMegaStar Sagittarius, MegaStar Capricorn and the Norwegian
\nStar, in no particular order.<\/p>\n
The ships are based throughout the Asia Pacific, with
\nSingapore, Malaysia's Port Klang, Phuket, Bangkok, Hong Kong,
\nTaipei, Kobe, Fukuoka and Pusan their ports of embarkation.<\/p>\n
Their combined gross tonnage makes Star Cruises one of the
\nfive largest cruise operators in the world, and the ships are
\nserviced by an English-speaking crew of over 32 nationalities.<\/p>\n
Star Cruises, which was incorporated in September 1993,
\nadvertises itself as \"The Leading Cruise Line in Asia Pacific\".<\/p>\n
The company's president and chief executive, Colin Au,
\nexplained that Star Cruises offered three different cruise
\nproducts in Asia.<\/p>\n
The first is the Star series, which Colin says appeals to
\nfirst-time cruisers and those who love fun and excitement. The
\nSuperStar series, which targets traditional cruisers who desire
\nservices and destinations similar to those offered worldwide.
\nLast is the MegaStar series, which is meant for sophisticated
\ncruisers.<\/p>\n
* The Star series. Both Star Aquarius and Star Pisces have
\nover 600 passenger cabins and are 12 decks high. Almost
\nidentical, both ships weigh 40,000 tons, measure 176 meters by 29
\nmeters and can accommodate 1,900 and 2,192 passengers,
\nrespectively.<\/p>\n
The ships were previously passenger ferry ships for a Swedish
\ncarrier before being renovated.<\/p>\n
* The MegaStar series. These ships are ideal for private
\ncharters, such as hosting wedding dinners.<\/p>\n
The MegaStar Aries and MegaStar Taurus, previously known as
\nAurora II and Aurora I, were constructed in 1991 in Germany.<\/p>\n
Weighing 3,264 tons, the two ships measure 85 meters in length
\nand have a carrying capacity of 72 passengers and 80 crew
\nmembers. The cabins in the vessels are surprisingly large and
\nfeature large windows.<\/p>\n
The size of the ships allow them to anchor very near offshore
\nislands around the region.<\/p>\n
The MegaStar Capricorn and MegaStar Aquarius are relatively
\nlarger vessels.<\/p>\n
* The SuperStar series. SuperStar Gemini offers multiple
\ndestinations from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Pangkor island,
\nPenang island, Langkawi island and Malacca in Malaysia, as well
\nas Phuket island in Thailand.<\/p>\n
The SuperStar Leo takes the holidaymaker to destinations in
\nChina, Vietnam and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
* The Norwegian Star series. The Miami-based Norwegian Cruise
\nLine (NCL) was acquired by Star Cruises in early 2000.<\/p>\n
It offers regularly scheduled cruises to the Caribbean in a
\nsingle-class atmosphere of informal luxury.<\/p>\n
NCL currently sails to more than 200 ports in Alaska,
\nAustralia, Bermuda, Caribbean, Europe (the Mediterranean, Baltic
\nand Scandinavia), Hawaii, Mexico, South America and Trans Canal.
