        "content": "<p>StanChart donates Rp 10b for Aceh<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) is offering Rp 10 billion (about<br>\nUS$1 million) in grants to help finance relief efforts and<br>\nreconstruction work in tsunami-affected Aceh and North Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>The money, which was symbolically handed over on Monday to<br>\nBank Indonesia, is part of $5 million the London-based bank has<br>\npledged for relief and reconstruction activities in countries<br>\naffected by the recent tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>SCB chief executive officer for Indonesia Stewart D. Hall said<br>\nthat of the Rp 10 billion, half would be disbursed immediately to<br>\nthe central bank for emergency relief efforts organized by the<br>\nInternational Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The remaining Rp 5 billion will also be channeled through<br>\nBank Indonesia, for various programs in cooperation with United<br>\nNations agencies,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hall said the SCB would continue to work with the central bank<br>\nto channel funds for future projects helping people in tsunami-<br>\nstricken areas.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;As soon as the assessment of the disaster is complete, we<br>\nwill pledge more funds to build schools and orphanages there,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>SCB is one of the largest international banks operating in<br>\nIndonesia, with 12 branches in five major cities providing<br>\nservices to over 100,000 customers.<\/p>\n<p>Also, some $4 million worth of aid has been pledged by<br>\nautomaker General Motors (GM) and delivery company UPS to help<br>\ntsunami victims in affected countries.<\/p>\n<p>UPS, which is providing about $3 million in donations, said in<br>\na statement it would ship emergency relief supplies via air, sea<br>\nand land from Europe, Asia and the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>GM&apos;s donation is in the form of cash, which will be presented<br>\nto the International Response Fund of the American Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;General Motors wants to assist in the global relief efforts<br>\nto provide food, water, medicine and other resources to the<br>\ndisaster victims as quickly as possible,&quot; GM chairman and CEO<br>\nRick Wagoner said.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, PT Korea Exchange Bank Danamon also donated Rp 1.85<br>\nbillion through Bank Indonesia as a sign of its commitment to<br>\nhelp tsunami victims.<\/p>\n<p>The bank also provided equipment and staff for the Korea<br>\nSupport Center for Tsunami Disaster located in Medan in order to<br>\nassist them in distributing the aid.<\/p>",
