Stamps for Aga Khan awards<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday signed a series of
\nstamps to mark today's presentation of the Aga Khan awards for
\narchitecture at the Royal Palace in Surakarta (Solo).<\/p>\n
The commemorative stamps will be formally launched today.<\/p>\n
The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, visited
\nthe President at the Merdeka Palace yesterday on the eve of the
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, he was accompanied by Minister of
\nEducation and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro and the chairman of
\nthe Association of Indonesian architects, Suntana.<\/p>\n
One of the 12 awards will be presented to the Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport for its landscape design.<\/p>\n
The awards were established in 1977 to identify and encourage
\nbuilding concepts that successfully address the needs and
\naspirations of Muslim societies.<\/p>\n
They recognizes examples of architectural excellence
\nthroughout the Muslim world in the areas of contemporary design,
\nsocial housing, community improvement and development, land
\nrestoration and re-use, conservation and landscape design.<\/p>\n
Accompanying Aga Khan on this visit is his daughter, Princess
\nZahra Aga Khan who is responsible within the Aga Khan's
\nsecretariat for programs supported by the Ismail Muslim community
\nrelating to social welfare, youth and women's activities.<\/p>\n
Previous projects in Indonesia that have won the award include
\nthe Kampung Improvement Project in Jakarta and Kampung Kali Code
