Stable situation<\/p>\n
Many think that the present government is a legacy of the past
\nwith its dark side. I believe, however, that people change, and
\nlearn from their and others' experiences to improve themselves.<\/p>\n
I agree with Gen. Wiranto that we should support, and give a
\nchance for President Habibie and his cabinet to work with their
\nbest efforts, and to prove themselves as the responsible and
\nsincere leaders with their full commitment to reformation.<\/p>\n
In this transitional period towards the coming election, we
\ncertainly need the president and his cabinet to put things back
\nin order, and restructure the country's politics and economy.<\/p>\n
What the common people need right now is a stable situation
\nwhere they can feel secure and sage to go to work, and do their
\ndaily activities without any fears or worries. They can't bear
\nany more chaos, and are tired of uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Life has been so hard for everyone since the economy
\nrecession. The country's economy is worsening every day, and
\npeople are hungry. They need jobs and food. The situation is
\nurgent for the funds to restore the country's economy.<\/p>\n
The IMF will drop the funds only if they are sure about the
\npolitical stability in the region. The same is true with the
\ninternational investors.<\/p>\n
President Habibie has been doing the right thing so far. He
\nlistens and responses to what people want and need. I'm not in
\nthe position of judging whether Habibie is the right man, because
\nI'm just an ordinary person. But, I can see that in this
\ntransitional period of his administration, Habibie is being
\nserious, and doing his best efforts to heal the country's
\neconomy, and to stabilize the situation.<\/p>\n
I'm hoping that President Habibie is being sincere. In the
\ntime of crisis, it is impossible for him to disappoint his
\ncountrymen and people's expectations, after so much sacrifices
\nhave been made -- the death of the four Trisakti students who
\nwere shot during the protest, and the students and the
\nintelectuals who have tirelessly been fighting for reformation,
\nalso thousands of innocent people who have been victimized during
\nthe riots.<\/p>\n
We're hoping that IMF, U.S. and the international world will
\nbe able to understand that there will be no reasons for them to
\ndelay their funds to Indonesia. The funds will mean a lot to the
\ncountry and the people. So, please, gentlemen in IMF, help us,
\nand don't fail us.<\/p>\n
When things get stable and a bit better, then we can start the
\nextra ordinary meeting of the People's Consultative Assembly's
\nand a fair and transparent election as scheduled.<\/p>\n
With the opposition leaders, and the human rights commission
\nbeing watchdog, I have the confidence, that things will work out
\nproperly, and the future president will be a real people's
\nchoice.<\/p>\n
Evolution sounds better than revolution as long as it's
\nconsistent and firm. Rapid changes in democratization in this
\ndifficult economy climate. I'm afraid, could do more irreparable
\ndamage. I'm obviously not an expert, but I think democracy has to
\nbe something more than simply organizing elections.<\/p>\n
The reason democracy works reasonably well in the 'west' is
\nthat it took hundreds of years to be shaped that people learned
\nthat it was not simply something to do with absolute power, or
\nsimply paper words. But it has to grow in people minds, so it
\ntakes time. I may be wrong. But, I'm afraid that economy will
\ncrash if we're focusing only on political freedom in the time of
\ncrisis like this.<\/p>\n
Hopefully everything will work well. Although it's still a
\nlong way to go, I believe, however that with the unity,
\nwillingness, and efforts, we'll have the chance to rebuild a
\nbetter Indonesia in the future.<\/p>\n
I will keep praying for the country's bright future to come
\ntrue.<\/p>\n
