Stability priority in Nabire<\/p>\n
NABIRE, Irian Jaya: Military chief Col. Marlyn Nainggolan said
\nthat the military's priority now is to ensure stability and
\nsecurity in the town.<\/p>\n
\"We have been conducting investigations but right now being in
\ncontrol of the situation is crucial,\" he told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Nainggolan was referring to the riot staged by nearly 3,000
\ndisgruntled civil service job applicants last Tuesday in Nabire,
\n3,150 kilometers (1,960 miles) northeast of Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to Marlyn, the positions will not be filled until
\nfurther instructions from Irian Jaya's governor.<\/p>\n
Marlyn added that when the situation has calmed down the
\nsuspected perpetrators will be dealt with according to the law.<\/p>\n
\"There was no political motive behind the action,\" he claimed.<\/p>\n
Four people were reportedly shot when they tried to grab a
\nsoldier's rifle and nine others were injured.<\/p>\n
A local prison was set on fire, with 41 prisoners having since
\nreoccupied the penitentiary and not fleeing as previously
\nreported.<\/p>\n
\"Overall the building is OK, it's just the roof that needs to
\nbe fixed,\" Marlyn said, adding that seven additional guards have
\nbeen deployed around the compound.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, local job seekers continue to complain that they
\nare not being tested more for general knowledge than for their
