        "content": "<p>Sri Lankan students held<\/p>\n<p>COLOMBO (Reuters): The Sri Lankan army has detained nine<br>\nuniversity students in northern Jaffna amid a campaign to push<br>\nthe government to match a unilateral ceasefire declared by Tamil<br>\nseparatists, the government said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The detentions come before a proposed rally in Jaffna city on<br>\nWednesday, at which students said they planned to pressure the<br>\ngovernment to agree to a ceasefire called last month by the<br>\nLiberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).<\/p>\n<p>A government statement said the students were taken into<br>\ncustody on Saturday about eight km north of Jaffna \"whilst<br>\npasting posters and distributing printed material pressurising<br>\nthe government to declare a ceasefire on the LTTE\".<\/p>\n<p>Under Sri Lanka's tough emergency regulations, in force almost<br>\ncontinually since the war started in 1983, police and the<br>\nmilitary have wide powers of arrest and detention.<\/p>",
