Sri Bintang's replacement<\/p>\n
Sri Bintang Pamungkas, who was withdrawn from the United
\nDevelopment Part (PPP) faction in the House of Representatives,
\nwill be replaced by Hadimulyo. The decision was made public by
\nthe general chairman of the party in Jayapura on Sunday evening.
\nBintang was withdrawn because he was considered too vocal and his
\noutspokenness was regarded as overstepping the boundaries of the
\nparty's codes of discipline.<\/p>\n
The interesting thing is that Hadimulyo is known to be a
\nmember of a non-governmental organization -- one of the societal
\ngroups which have been known to be critical and vocal in their
\nexpression of grievances, particularly concerning human rights
\nand democratization issues.<\/p>\n
The question is: Will Hadimulyo's presence in parliament not
\nmake things awkward for the PPP faction, as was the case when Sri
\nBintang Pamungkas was a member?<\/p>\n
If Hadimulyo's political stance remains like that of most NGO
\nmembers -- that is, critical and vocal -- it could be
\nembarrassing for the PPP. On the other hand, if he changes and
\nsoftens his attitude he will be ridiculed by his former
\ncolleagues.<\/p>\n
It would be interesting to hear Hadimulyo's comments. As for
\nthe United Development Party and its faction in the House of
\nRepresentatives, their leaders have already stated that a vocal
\nmember will pose no problems. And according to Aisyah Amini, one
\nof the chairpersons of the PPP board and a vocal member of the
\nlegislature, vocal parliament members are quite acceptable as
\nlong as their commitment and behavior remains in line with the
\ndisciplinary rules of the parties they represent.<\/p>\n
