Squatters problem keep KAI busy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The state railway company PT KAI continuously
\nfaces the headache of dealing with squatters who illegally occupy
\nits land along the railway tracks and are reluctant to be
\nremoved, an official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking in a meeting with some of the squatters, city
\nofficials and councillors, PT KAI head of land and property
\nsection Kusnadi said about seven million square meters of its
\nland, or one-third of the company's 20 million square meters of
\nland in Greater Jakarta is currently \"owned\" by people, who build
\ntheir houses on KAI property without any legal documents or
\npermission.<\/p>\n
The removal of the squatters at Karang Anyar subdistrict in
\nSawah Besar district, Central Jakarta, which led to a protest by
\nthe squatters at the City Council since Tuesday is just one
\nexample out of many repeatedly faced by the company, he said.<\/p>\n
Kusnadi said that KAI had no choice but to stand by its
\ndecision to prohibit anyone from building houses on its land.<\/p>\n
\"These people keep returning to rebuild their homes,\" Kusnadi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Wednesday was the third day of the protest by some 300
\nresidents from Karang Anyar, who took turns staying the night in
\nthe City Council's parking lot.<\/p>\n
The residents said authorities acted on Monday without
\nadequate warning, violently removing their belongings and
\nclearing shacks located under the railway tracks from Mangga
\nBesar and Sawah Besar train stations in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A resident, Udin, said they admitted they were illegal
\nsquatters, \"but why are we the only ones to be evacuated when
\nthere are so many others living along the train tracks?\" He
\nwondered if other residents had bribed officials. (07)<\/p>",
