Squatters by West Flood Canal evicted<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: City public order officers forcibly evicted 200
\nfamilies over the weekend who live in shanties along the banks of
\nthe West Flood Canal, in Penjaringan district of North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Around 200 public order personnel backed by police officers
\nbulldozed the huts and torched the remaining rubble, an
\neyewitness told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The squatters appeared to be resigned to their fate as this
\nwas the 13th eviction they had experienced.<\/p>\n
\"We protest the eviction as we were not notified beforehand,\"
\na resident said.<\/p>\n
Isnu, a volunteer with a non-governmental organization
\nassisting the squatters, blasted the eviction saying that it
\nsimply reflects Governor Sutiyoso administration's failure to
\nkeep their promise to stop all evictions while negotiation
\nbetween the squatters and the city administration continued.<\/p>\n
\"We are still negotiating their fate after the eviction in
\nJuly as some of them are still taking shelter in the garage in
\nthe backyard of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas
\nHAM) building on Jl. Latuharhari, Central Jakarta,\" said Isnu.<\/p>\n
The administration demolished their illegal huts for the first
\ntime in October last year. --JP<\/p>",
