'Sports yet to develop into industry'<\/p>\n
Legislators last week approved a bill on sports which, among
\nother things, requires that the government provide pensions for
\nnational athletes and organizations involved in developing the
\ncountry's sports. The Jakarta Post talked to some residents to
\nget their views on the issue.<\/p>\n
Kaezar Maulana, 30, is a professional working for the
\nIndonesian AIDS Committee.<\/p>\n
We have to admit that sports have not developed into an
\nindustry here. That's why most of our athletes cannot rely on
\nonly being professional sportspeople.<\/p>\n
It will take political will from the government to build up
\nthe field as a potential industry. Because as soon as the
\ngovernment makes a move, business entities will follow suit.
\nCurrently, there are only very few fields in sports that receive
\nsupport from companies.<\/p>\n
Such support will encourage athletes to perform their best and
\nwork just like a professional would.<\/p>\n

Everyone should be concerned about the development of sports
\nin Indonesia. Actually, sports could attract a far wider audience
\nhere, since our community lacks entertainment.<\/p>\n
It depends on how they package the events.<\/p>\n
By attracting a wider audience, the associations or the
\norganizers can provide better remuneration for their athletes.<\/p>\n
The welfare of athletes should not rely on some government
\nbill because the realization of such laws is often vague. There
\nneeds to be a move from both businesses that have benefited from
\nsports events, as well as sports fans.<\/p>\n
