        "content": "<p>S'pore's Islamic insurance<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's first Islamic insurance scheme<br>\nhas been launched with the aim of giving Moslem Singaporeans an<br>\ninvestment vehicle that will not compromise their religious<br>\nbeliefs, its promoters said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The Takaful Fund was announced by Ampro Holdings Singapore<br>\nPte. Ltd., the economic arm of the Association of Moslem<br>\nProfessionals, and the NTUC Income insurance cooperative which<br>\nhope to widen Singapore's role as a financial center.<\/p>\n<p>The fund will invest in \"halal\" or Islamically-permitted<br>\nstocks here and elsewhere in the region, avoiding businesses<br>\nrelated to such activities as gambling, alcohol-production and<br>\ninterest-bearing instruments barred by Islam.<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen countries have adopted Islamic principles in<br>\ntheir financial systems and in some nations including Malaysia,<br>\nThailand, the Philippines and Hong Kong, parallel Islamic<br>\nfinancial instruments are available.<\/p>",
