S'pore withdraws from canoeing, rowing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Apparently aware that it would not win rowing
\ngolds at the 19th SEA Games, Singapore has decided to withdraw
\nfrom canoeing, and the fours and eights rowing events.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Rowing Association chairman Basoeki said yesterday
\nthat the Indonesian Sports Council would lobby Singapore to
\nchange its mind.<\/p>\n
Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia will compete
\nin the rowing and canoeing events.<\/p>\n
\"But if other countries withdraw, we may have to cancel the
\nevent,\" Basoeki said.<\/p>\n
The regional sports meet will run from Oct. 11 to Oct. 19,
\nwith the rowing, canoeing and traditional boat races being held
\non Jatiluhur lake in Purwakarta, West Java.<\/p>\n
\"I think the Singaporeans would have a better chance in the
\ncanoeing and rowing than in the traditional boat race,\" Basoeki
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Games will feature 12 canoeing, 11 rowing and eight
\ntraditional boat race events.<\/p>\n
The association says accommodation problems are still not
\nsettled, and some athletes may have to stay at the Horison Hotel
\nin Bekasi, about 70 kilometers from the dam.<\/p>\n
The rowing organizers' secretary, Lina Harun, said that she
\nwas still waiting to hear if the Pupuk Kujang hotel in Cikampek,
\nabout 30 kms from the dam, could house athletes.<\/p>\n
\"If the hotel can accommodate the athletes, they won't have to
\ntravel that far to get to the venue,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Some athletes will stay at the Sahid Cikarang, about 50kms
\nfrom the dam.<\/p>\n
The organizers are still waiting for the Rp 450 million
\n(US$169,800) promised to them by the Games consortium. The funds
\nare earmarked for setting up cabins for the athletes and
\nreferees, the events secretariat, the control commission, the
\nmedical team and the drug testing team. The money will also be
\nused to build temporary starting gates, a pier and toilets.<\/p>\n
The Rp 300 million boathouse has been completed.<\/p>\n
Basoeki said the organizers had set up competition lanes but
\nhad to move them because there was an island between the start
\nand finish poles.<\/p>\n
The association is aiming to win 25 rowing golds from the 31
\non offer at the Games. It is sending nine male and six female
\nkayak rowers, five male Canadian rowers and seven polo canoers to
\nSouth Korea for an international competition from Sept. 3 to
\nSept. 8.<\/p>\n
Single sculls rower Lasmin will compete at an international
\ncompetition in France from Aug. 30 to Sept. 7.<\/p>\n
Yachting<\/p>\n
Yachting coach Iskandar Sitompul said yesterday that the
\nessential racing equipment had arrived on Aug. 3 but the
\nIndonesian Yachting Association was having trouble getting it out
\nof the port.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know why it's so difficult to get the equipment out
\nof the port. As the host, we should try out the equipment before
\nthe Games. There's one container carrying design boards and race
\nboards. But we still have no idea what they look like,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Yachting training director Subagio Sutjitro said more
\nequipment was expected to arrive on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n
The association, which wants to win four of the 15 yachting
\ngolds, says Singapore and Thailand will be the hardest countries
\nto beat.<\/p>\n
The association will field the following athletes: I Gusti
\nMade Oka Sulaksana, Yusuf Faisal, Nanang Suhendi, Ray Gunadi (one
\ndesign mistral), Abdul Malik Faisal, Micky Sampelan, Fadly Faisal
\n(male race board), Yuni Trisnawati (female race board), Kusdiana
\nAdi, Franky Rene (Hobie 16 feet), Pudji Irianto Ganefo, Kris
\nSubiantoro (Fire ball), Ario Dipo Subagio, Ujang Supriatna (470),
\nSujatmiko Siswanto (Laser), Regatta Tri Setya (male Optimist
\nunder-15), Yuni Kartika (female Optimist under-15), Dian Puspita
\nRini (Europe), Djoko Susilo, Subakti (Enterprise), Bobby
\nSulistyanto, Herbito Igustino (male 420), Antaresti, Dewi (female
