S'pore to host joint sea exercise<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: The navies of 14 countries in the Pacific Rim are
\nto hold their first joint sea exercise this weekend in the South
\nChina Sea, the Straits Times newspaper reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Fifteen ships as well as a number of maritime patrol planes
\nand helicopters will carry out two days of maneuvers to test how
\nwell their ships and aircraft work together.<\/p>\n
The exercise will involve warships exchanging information
\nelectronically with each other and with the aircraft to obtain a
\nclearer picture of what lies beyond their visual horizons. They
\nalso hope to improve their ability to cooperate during
\nemergencies, such as in mine-clearing work and search-and-rescue
\noperations.<\/p>\n
The participating countries are among 18 that belong to a
\ngroup called the Western Pacific Naval Symposium. Member navies
\ninclude Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, France, Indonesia,
\nJapan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines,
\nRussia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Tonga, the United
\nStates and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
The grouping was started in 1988 for navies around the Pacific
\nto discuss maritime issues and promote mutual understanding
