        "content": "<p>S'pore to crack down on maid abuse<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE: The island state promised Indonesia on Thursday it<br>\nwould act to prevent the abuse of foreign maids working in the<br>\ncity-state.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore Labor Minister Lee Boon Yang told his Indonesian<br>\ncounterpart, Jacob Nua Wea, that the government will monitor<br>\nemployment agencies that hire out maids, offer maids additional<br>\ntraining and require employers to take an orientation course.<\/p>\n<p>These initiatives were announced earlier this month after a<br>\nstring of brutal beatings sparked a debate over the treatment of<br>\nmaids in Singapore. Many of the victims were Indonesian.<\/p>\n<p>Nua Wea said Jakarta will better regulate Indonesian<br>\nrecruiters who send maids to Singapore and provide the maids with<br>\nbetter training.<\/p>\n<p>Some 140,000 maids are employed in Singapore, with about<br>\n80,000 coming from the Philippines and the rest from Indonesia,<br>\nSri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. --AP<\/p>",
