S'pore supports peacekeeping idea<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Reuter): Singapore agreed in principle with a
\nMalaysian proposal that the Association of Southeast Asian
\nNations (ASEAN) should aim to field a peacekeeping force under UN
\nauspices, Singapore Minister for Defense Lee Boon Yang said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
\"We agree in principle with the concept,\" he said at a news
\nconference here following a meeting with his Malaysian
\ncounterpart Najib Tun Razak.<\/p>\n
Lee added it would have to be discussed with the rest of ASEAN
\nbefore agreement was reached. ASEAN groups Singapore, Malaysia,
\nThailand, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.<\/p>\n
He had received a \"quite positive reaction\" to the idea from
\nIndonesia, Najib told the news conference.<\/p>\n
The two ministers had just signed a memo of understanding
\n(MOU) on defense industrial cooperation. The agreement might lead
\nto joint procurement, \"co-development and co-production\" of
\nproducts in the defense area, Najib said.<\/p>",
