        "content": "<p>S'pore steps up security checks<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE: The government said on Thursday security would be<br>\nbeefed up ahead of Sept. 11 in this wealthy Southeast Asian<br>\nnation where more than a dozen men -- believed linked to al-Qaeda<br>\n-- were arrested for allegedly plotting to blow up the U.S.<br>\nEmbassy and other targets late last year.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore and the United States have close military relations.<br>\nThe country recently opened a new naval facility built<br>\nspecifically to accommodate U.S. aircraft carriers, and also is<br>\nhome to a U.S. Navy logistics unit.<\/p>\n<p>Armed patrols at Singapore's Changi International airport by<br>\npolice and soldiers, which began last October, will be more<br>\nfrequent and more visible ahead of the Sept. 11 anniversary, said<br>\nSoh.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore will also perform more stringent immigration and<br>\nsecurity checks at ferry terminals and bridge entrances to this<br>\nisland nation, he said.
