        "content": "<p>S'pore starts coffee futures<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): The Singapore Commodity Exchange (Sicom)<br>\nlaunched yesterday a global coffee futures contract to serve<br>\nAsia's growing market for the commodity to hedge prices within<br>\nthe region's time zone.<\/p>\n<p>Sicom's Robusta Coffee Contract would fill up the time gap<br>\nbetween New York coffee market's close and London market's<br>\nopening, officials of the exchange said.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee is the second biggest commodity in money terms after<br>\noil.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign coffee traders said that introduction of the contract<br>\nin Singapore was appropriate now in view of Asia's growing<br>\nRobusta production potential.<\/p>\n<p>Asia accounts for about 15 percent of world coffee production.<br>\nUp to 45 percent of the region's coffee is of the Robusta type.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is the largest producer of coffee in the region,<br>\nfollowed by Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>To help kick-start the coffee contract, Sicom has declared an<br>\noutright discount of 50 percent on the clearing fees be given for<br>\nall corporate coffee trades for a period of six months from<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>",
