        "content": "<p>S'pore signals FTA with EU a priority<\/p>\n<p>LISBON: Singapore said on Tuesday it would like to complete a<br>\nfree trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union before a<br>\nsimilar pact is reached between the bloc and the ten-member ASEAN<br>\ngrouping of southeast Asian nations.<\/p>\n<p>\"An EU-ASEAN arrangement may take some time to come about,\"<br>\nSingapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong told reporters in Lisbon<br>\nfollowing talks with his Portuguese counterpart Jose Manuel Durao<br>\nBarroso.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the meantime we can consider an EU-Singapore free trade<br>\narrangement,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>\"An EU-Singapore free trade agreement would be of interest to<br>\nboth the EU and Singapore and of course it could pave the way for<br>\na later EU-ASEAN arrangement.\"<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) -- which<br>\ngroups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the<br>\nPhilippines, Singpore, Thailand and Vietnam -- agreed earlier<br>\nthis year to create a European-style common market by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore had wanted the common market to be established<br>\nearlier, by 2015 at the latest.<\/p>\n<p>Goh began a three-day official visit to Portugal on Monday.
