S'pore sentences two for piracy<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (UPI): Singapore has handed down the longest jail
\nterms in Southeast Asia for copyright infringement to two men
\nconvicted of possessing counterfeit CD-ROMs, officials said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The two men, who were sentenced to 30 months and 18 months in
\njail respectively, both owned and operated shops that sold
\ncounterfeit CD-ROMs.<\/p>\n
Private investigators hired by the Alliance Against CD-ROM
\nTheft discovered the two stores in Singapore's Sim Lim Square, a
\nmall specializing in computer and electronics products, a news
\nrelease from the organization said.<\/p>\n
The investigators alerted Singapore police to the illegal
\nactivities, which led to raids of the shops and the recovery of
\nmore than 5,000 fake CD-ROMs.<\/p>\n
AACT, a group formed to combat intellectual property rights
\nviolations in Asia, is comprised of companies increasingly
\naffected by copyright piracy. The companies include the Business
\nSoftware Alliance, Simon & Schuster, Sega Enterprises and Virgin
\nInteractive.<\/p>",
