        "content": "<p>S'pore opens ferry terminal<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): Singapore opened a Singapore $29 million<br>\n($20 million) passenger ferry terminal yesterday to cope with<br>\ngrowing traffic with neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The Tanah Merah terminal near Changi airport will cut<br>\ntraveling time to Indonesia's Riau islands and the east coast of<br>\npeninsular Malaysia, Minister of Communications Mah Bow Tan said.<\/p>\n<p>The terminal complements four regional ferry berths built in<br>\n1992 at the Singapore port.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto and<br>\nMinister of Industry Tunky Ariwibowo attended the opening.<\/p>\n<p>Mah said prospects for regional ferry traffic were bright.<br>\nSince 1990, the number of regional ferry passengers passing<br>\nthrough Singapore had grown at 16 percent a year, and this year<br>\nit expects to handle three million passengers.<\/p>\n<p>The Tanah Merah terminal alone can handle 1.5 million<br>\npassengers a year, with provision to expand to two million.<\/p>\n<p>The terminal will be the main gateway to the Bintan Beach<br>\nInternational Resort and Bintan industrial estate on the Riau<br>\nislands which Singapore firms are helping to develop.<\/p>",
