SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore has appointed Japan's Penta-Ocean
\nConstruction Co. to reclaim land off Singapore's southern shore,
\nto merge seven islands into a massive offshore petrochemical
\nproduction complex, officials said Thursday.<\/p>\n
Penta-Ocean will undertake the project on a joint-venture
\nbasis with local partner Koon Construction and Transport Co. Pte.
\nLtd. in the first stage of reclamation costing S$240 million
\ndollars (US$160 million).<\/p>\n
The Jurong Island project, coordinated by the Jurong Town
\nCorporation (JTC), is part of Singapore's plan to create an
\nintegrated chemicals industry.<\/p>\n
\"The natural choice is to develop land at the cluster of
\nsouthern islands off Jurong where existing refineries and
\npetrochemical industries are already located,\" said Ong Geok Soo,
\nJTC's director of technical services.<\/p>\n
The Penta-Ocean contract runs for three years, during which a
\nland mass of 184 hectares (454.66 acres) will be created, said
\nOng. Two other reclamation stages will then be implemented.<\/p>",
