S'pore minister begins RI visit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (AFP): Singapore Trade and Industry Minister George
\nYeo arrived Sunday for a four-day visit during which he will
\nwitness the signing of a major natural gas agreement and hold
\ntalks with Indonesia's leadership.<\/p>\n
Singapore embassy officials said Yeo was scheduled to attend
\nthe signing of the agreement between the Indonesian state oil
\ncompany Pertamina and Singapore Power Ltd, Monday.<\/p>\n
The contract, the second between the two countries, is
\nexpected to be worth $7 billion and is set to be the highlight of
\nYeo's visit.<\/p>\n
It would lead to the delivery of natural gas from the South
\nSumatra gas fields in Indonesia to Singapore over a 20-year
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Last month, the two sides launched a joint multibillion-dollar
\nproject to supply natural gas from Indonesia's West Natuna fields
\nto the city-state via a 656-kilometer (406-mile) undersea gas
\npipeline.<\/p>\n
After Monday's signing, the minister is scheduled to hold
\ntalks with President Abdurrahaman Wahid and Vice President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
Yeo will hold separate talks with the speakers of the upper
\nand lower houses of parliament, Amien Rais and Akbar Tanjung.<\/p>\n
In Singapore, a trade and industry ministry statement said the
\nmain purpose of Yeo's visit was to "enhance Singapore's bilateral
\nties with Indonesia and to explore new business opportunities."<\/p>\n
Relations have gradually improved over the past months
\nfollowing visits by top Indonesian officials and Wahid after the
\nIndonesian leader launched a scathing attack on the neighboring
\ncity-state last year.<\/p>\n
Much of Indonesia's trade is carried out through Singapore, a
\nfellow founding member of the Association of South East Asian
\nNations.<\/p>",
