SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore newspapers have been warned against
\npublishing "rash" editorials on the domestic policies of
\nneighboring countries, the Straits Times reported on Friday.<\/p>\n
It quoted Minister for Information and the Arts (Mita) Lee
\nYock Suan as saying in parliament that newspapers "must be
\ncircumspect when commenting on the domestic politics of our ASEAN
\nneighbors."<\/p>\n
Asked whether newspapers had to restrict their editorials to
\nconform with government policy, Lee said: "Mita does not control
\nthe editorial line of newspapers, which are independent private
\nenterprises.<\/p>\n
"However, editorial independence does not mean complete
\nfreedom to write as they desire." Mita is responsible for issuing
\nlicenses for any publication in Singapore.<\/p>",
