        "content": "<p>S'pore interbank rate negative<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): Interbank rates have slipped into the<br>\nnegative in Singapore with banks charging other banks to park<br>\nfunds overnight, bankers said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are a lot of excess funds in the market and not enough<br>\nborrowers,\" said Andrew Chan, a senior money market dealer at<br>\nDeutsche Bank AG.<\/p>\n<p>The interbank rate for overnight deposits has been between<br>\nnegative 0.0625 percent and zero for the past two-and-a-half<br>\nweeks to deter depositors, said Chan.<\/p>\n<p>\"Market sentiment is positive about the Singapore economy and<br>\na lot of funds are coming from Hong Kong,\" said another dealer.<\/p>\n<p>She said speculation about the reportedly poor health of<br>\nChinese leader Deng Xiaoping had contributed to the flow of money<br>\nout of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>Dealers said the sluggish stock market had also led investors<br>\nto park their funds in banks while waiting for a rebound in share<br>\nprices.<\/p>",
