S'pore gas import studied<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Eleven foreign firms have bid to become
\nSingapore government consultants looking into importing natural
\ngas in liquefied or piped form for power stations and households,
\nan official said.<\/p>\n
Power-guzzling Singapore at present imports gas via a pipeline
\nfrom neighboring Malaysia and is discussing buying natural gas
\nfrom Indonesia's petroleum giant Pertamina.<\/p>\n
Officials said the appointed consultant, apart from other
\nworks, "will provide comprehensive information on all sizable
\nknown and potential sources of exportable gas supplies, and
\nidentify suitable sites in Singapore for the gas receiving
\nstations and liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal."<\/p>\n
Under the LNG process, the natural gas found in the field has
\nfirst to be liquefied via a cooling process, to enable it to be
\ntransported by special LNG tankers to customers' import terminals
\nand receiving stations, where the LNG is reconverted to gaseous
\nform.<\/p>\n
Building a liquefaction-cum-receiving terminal could cost
\nabout US$5 billion, industry sources said.<\/p>",
