Spirit of togetherness<\/p>\n
Speaking on the occasion of the Waisak celebration on July 12,
\n1994, President Soeharto said that the sociocultural society of
\nIndonesia is a natural phenomenon. So we have to respect each
\nother in our social life. According to the President, we have no
\nchoice but to nurture the spirit of togetherness, so that
\ndifferences prevailing among us become a dynamic force in our
\ncourse to progress and achieve common goals.<\/p>\n
This perception is not new. It remains factual and relevant
\nfor various reasons. One of the reasons is that the globalization
\ntide has caused a pluralistic nation to disintegrate. This
\napparently happened because the unity of the nation, which
\nconsisted of different ethnic groups, was based on the power of
\narms, instead of the people's conscience. The nations with plural
\nsocieties must learn a lesson from this fact and question the
\nnature of their pluralism.<\/p>\n
As far as Indonesia is concerned, the society will see whether
\nthe implementation of development serves to solidify and
\nstrengthen the spirit of togetherness, and encourage social
\nsolidarity. This is the real challenge facing us.<\/p>\n
