Spirit of deliberation lost?<\/p>\n

The debate surrounding former president Soeharto has heated up
\nin the capital, particularly since the South Jakarta District
\nCourt officially dismissed all charges against Soeharto. Clashes
\npeople the former president's supporters and opponents were
\nunavoidable, claiming some victims.<\/p>\n
As a Muslim, I am sad to hear and see groups of demonstrators
\nusing the name of Islam, or claiming to be doing things for and
\non behalf of Islam. I am taking this opportunity to warn them
\nthat they are facing university student groups whose members are
\nmostly Muslim as well. Do they not realize that they could have
\nbeen manipulated into facing off against fellow Muslims, thus
\ndividing them all?<\/p>\n
Furthermore, it surprises me that the police seem to regard
\nthe students and those anti-Soeharto groups as their enemies. In
\nmy opinion, the police alone are enough to safeguard Soeharto's
\nfamily. No other security personnel, particularly civilians, are
\nrequired.<\/p>\n
Finally, I would like to appeal to the police and the students
\nto work together to create a peaceful atmosphere in Jakarta. Or
\nhave you all lost the ability to discuss and deliberate to reach
\na consensus?<\/p>\n
