Speed up flyover project: Councilor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A city councilor said yesterday the completion
\nof the flyover at the junction of Jl. Matraman Raya - Jl.
\nPramuka, East Jakarta, needs to be sped up to ease the area's
\ntraffic woes.<\/p>\n
Hasan Daisy of the Commission E in charge of economic affairs,
\nyesterday said the contractor deserved a warning to prevent it
\nfrom falling behind schedule.<\/p>\n
He said congestion at the junction had worsened since
\nconstruction began several months ago.<\/p>\n
Motorists have often complained about chronic traffic jams in
\nthe area, especially during heavy rain. Long lines of vehicles
\nare often seen coming from four directions -- Jatinegara, Senen,
\nPramuka and Matraman.<\/p>\n
Susana Deviane, a passenger on a public bus bound for Kampung
\nMelayu-Tanah Abang told Antara she was frequently late for work
\nbecause of the traffic.<\/p>\n
She said it took her two hours instead of the normal 30
\nminutes to reach her office.<\/p>\n
Hasan said all city construction projects should not worsen
\ntraffic conditions.<\/p>\n
\"If necessary, construction work should be done in the evening
\nwhen the traffic flow is lighter,\" Hasan said.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said infrastructure construction
\nshould not lead to complaints of environmental problems in
\nprojects which take a long time to complete.<\/p>\n
\"Every infrastructure development must be completed as quickly
\nas possible, and must not create new problems which disturb
\npeople and the surrounding environment,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
He ordered relevant officials, including those at the local
\npublic works office, to watch the process and schedule of every
