Special Yearend Section<\/p>\n
As was the case in 2001, this year we are happy to provide our
\nloyal readers with a wide variety of yearend articles covering
\nthe main issues that have been dominating the life of the country
\nfor the past 12 months.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Post hosted a two-day seminar involving 14
\nscholars from several fields of expertise at the Santika Hotel,
\nJakarta on Nov. 21 and 22, 2002, for advice on topics which
\nshould be presented.<\/p>\n
The participants discussed the topics and shared their views
\nbefore arriving at some concrete conclusions about the articles
\nto be presented, which will appear in the Dec. 30 and Dec. 31
\nSpecial Yearend Section of the paper.<\/p>\n
The seminar was moderated by senior economist Djisman
\nSimanjuntak of Prasetia Mulya, and heard input from Bantarto
\nBandoro, of the Indonesian Quarterly at the Centre for Strategic
\nand International Studies (CSIS), economist M. Chatib Basri of
\nthe Institute for Economic and Social Research, the School of
\nEconomy, University of Indonesia,Chusnul Mar'iyah of the National
\nElection Committee (KPU), B. Herry-Priyono, a lecturer of the
\nDriyarkara School of Philosophy, Jakarta, Ibrahim Assegaf, a
\nJakarta-based lawyer, Philips J. Vermonte and Puspa Delima Amri
\nof CSIS, Raden Pardede of the Danareksa, M. Riefqi Muna of The
\nRidep Institute, Satya Arinanto from the University of
\nIndonesia's School of Law, Smita Notosusanto from the Center for
\nElectoral Reform (Cetro) and Yanuar Nugroho from Indonesia
\nBusiness Watch.<\/p>\n
The focus of the discussions were a full review of the
\nnational reform agenda, which to a great extent, has been
\ndistorted or derailed. The Sept. 11, 2001 and Oct. 12, 2002
\nterror strikes have obviously worsened the national political and
\neconomic situation, which already had been deteriorating largely
\ndue to ineffective governance here. A lot of problems are
\nunresolved, yet many of those are not even being discussed by the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
