Special team sought to maintain Monas<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A city councilor has urged the municipality to
\nset up an integrated team to supervise the maintenance of the
\nNational Monument (Monas) in Medan Merdeka Square, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The establishment of the team, which should be under the
\nsupervision of the Central Jakarta mayoralty office, is badly
\nneeded due to the poor condition of the monument and its
\nsurroundings, Amarullah Asbah, head of Commission C for finance
\naffairs, said Monday.<\/p>\n
"The poor state of Monas is mainly due to the unavailability
\nof a team to coordinate its management," he said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the maintenance of Monas is administered by
\ndifferent agencies. "The city sanitation agency, for example, is
\nin charge of cleaning the area, the city park agency of tending
\nthe park and the city public works agency of maintaining the
\nbuilding," Amarullah said.<\/p>\n
The counselor argued that having so many agencies involved
\nmade coordination arduous. "Can you imagine that just to get
\ngarbage cans installed takes months to process," he said, adding
\nthat this was caused mainly by the absence of an independent
\noffice in charge of maintenance at Monas.<\/p>\n
Amarullah, therefore, underlined the importance of
\nestablishing an integrated team directly supervised by the
\nCentral Jakarta mayoralty.<\/p>\n
"With this kind of team, red tape could be eliminated and the
\nmayoralty would have full responsibility of taking care of
\nMonas," he said.<\/p>\n
A similar team has also been established in West Jakarta
\nmayoralty with the aim of coordinating the renovation of old
\nbuildings in the area.<\/p>\n
"I hope the municipality will act soon on this because the
\nshabby condition of Monas needs immediate attention," he said,
\nadding that monument's surroundings had been turned into a
\nbusiness site for sidewalks vendors.<\/p>\n
"Monas is one of the country's landmark buildings. So, please
\ndon't use this monument as a market," he said. (07)<\/p>",
